We have come closer now to Cape Town - about 50 km (31 miles) away. This is the home of the KWV and is undoubtedly the most famous of the South African wine areas (in part because of the annual Nederburg wine auctions and tasting sessions). Plenty of simple and inexpensive wine is produced here but Paarl-Wellington is best known for its such as KWV, Laborie, Landskroon, Nederburg, and Simonsvlei. The climate here is truly comparable with the Mediterranean, with long hot summers and just enough rain to not be dependent on irrigation.
The best known wines from this area are the Sauvignon Blanc, Steen (Chenin Blanc), and Chardonnay whites, and Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon reds.
