     It is not surprising that Beaujolais Nouveau is nicknamed 'the third river of Lyon'. Others wax lyrical about the outstanding fruitiness of the new season's Beaujolais. Expertenced wine drinkers regard this young wine as heralding the results of that vintage and do not make such a fuss. They consider the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau more as a custom than a passing fad. It is up to you whether to buy them or not. In any event try to avoid the cheaper examples. Always drink the better Beaujolais Nouveau such as a Beaujolais ViJlages Nouveau chilled at about 50°F (10°C).

    BEAUJOLAIS

    The basic Beaujolais is produced as a white, rose, and red.. Light, fruity wines are made on more than 10,000 hectares of predominantly chalky soil. Drink these wines at approx. 51.8° (F11°C).

    Since the most southerly white Burgundy appellation of St-Veran came into existence the production of white Beaujolais has been significantly reduced. Beaujolais Blanc is made with Chardonnay grapes (and occasionally a little Aligote). The wine is fresh and fruity in taste and nose. Experienced wine drinkers may detect a hint of hazelnut, mint, butter and sometimes green vegetal such as green pepper (paprika).

    There are 39 communes which are permitted to call themselves AC Beaujolais Villages. The wine is soft and generous with a delightful cherry red colour and considerable scent and taste of fruit such as blackcurrant and strawberry. Drink at 51.8-53.6°F (11-12°C).{jcomments on}

    Bordeaux Wine BottlesThe Gironde, in south west France, is the country’s largest Departement, and the home of Bordeaux wines, including claret, Britain’s favorite French wine for centuries. But while all claret is Bordeaux, not all Bordeaux is claret.

    Bordeaux is the largest region of fine wine production – red, white and dessert – in the world. The vines cover more than 500 square miles, split almost evenly between red and white grapes, and most of the wines have AC status. The vineyards run from the west bank of the Gironde estuary southwards to below the river Garonne.

    Burgundy wineBurgundy stretches from Chablis, about 114 miles south east of Paris, southwards along autoroute A6 almost to Lyon. The 75,000 acres of vine include a number of clearly defined region – Chablis and the Auxerrois, Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote de Chalonnaise, Macon and Beaujolais. The region is home to many of the world’s finest wines, both red and white – and many of the most expensive. Prices of the best wines have rocketed in the last few years, but there are still many bargains to be had.

    Musigny (Côte de Nuits): Smooth and stylish with velvety fruit. Will keep for ages.

    Nuits St. George (Côte de Nuits): Has improved recently. Spicy nose and big, rich plummy fruit flavour with touches of sweetness. Age well.

    Pernand-Vergelesses (Côte de Beaune): Can be silky- smooth and fruity, but often not. Best drunk youngish.

    Pommard (Côte de Beaune): Big and solid but classy, with plummy fruit. Age well.

    CHABLIS WINE REGION

    Grapes

    Chablis Fine Wine Chardonnay: The only grape allowed for Chablis producing a steely dry, green, acidic wine. The best wines are much richer, with depth and intense flavour although still bone dry.

    Sauvignon Blanc: Used for Sauvignon de St.Bris. The variety is not legal in Chablis which is why the wine has only VDQS status.

    Pinot Noir: Mainly used for red wine production, with some César, Gamay and Tressot.

      The Côtes Châlonnaise between Chagny, Montagny and Couches will probably surprise many a visitor.

    BOURGOGNE CÔTE CHALONNAISE

    This is a fairly recent appellation (1990) for white but especially red wines, spread through 44 communes.

    The white French wine is a light, floral and fruity Chardonnay (citrus and exotic fruit) with a lithe, fatty, and balanced taste. The very fruity cherry red wine is light, friendly, warm, and generous.

    RULLY

    These French white and red wines acquire an aromatic finesse through their chalk soils. The white Rully is a very pure and clear golden white with very seductive bouquet containing broom, almond, and citrus fruit with a fresh and elegant taste that has undertones of fruit and flowers.

    The ruby red Rully has a nose when young of red fruit such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and red- currant. Late this evolves into a riper fruit bouquet with suggestions of tobacco and moist autumn soil. The taste is typical of a Burgundy, fat and fresh, with elegant tannin and much fruitiness, especially in the aftertaste.

    MERCUREY

    Most white Mercurey wines are a light, friendly, and above all uncomplicated aperitif French wine. The red Mercurey is an attractive ruby red colour and fruity aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant, and cherry, often with a pinch of herbs.

     

    GIVRY

    Like its neighbours from Montagny, wine from Givry is an entirely under regarded Chardonnay white. Consequently it is modestly priced for the quality offered.

    There are a couple of whites from Givry that have gorgeous bouquets of acacia and may blossom, apple, almond, and sometimes also lime blossom and lilac. These full, fatty whites can be found in the totally reliable Guide Hachette. Drink this French wine with freshwater fish.

    Red Givry is very colourful with   an   intensely aromatic nose   of redcurrant and   blackcurrant. When older there are herbal undertones. This is a fleshy wine with considerable finesse and a pleasant fruity taste.

    MONTAGNY

    The best Montagny wine has a pale and unimposing colour but with an exceptional array of scents: apple, citrus fruit, fresh almonds, fern, hazelnut, and butter.

    The taste is lithe, elegant, fresh, and rounded.

     

    BOURGOGNE ALIGOTIDE BOUZERON

    This French wine is better than the general Aligote AC. It is an exceptionally pleasing fresh wine with a seductive nose of roses, peony, and white fruit, sometimes accompanied by cinnamon.{jcomments on}

  • Cotes du Roussillon for French Wines

      The soils of the vineyards of Roussillon are very complex and variable: chalk, clay, shale, gneis, granite, and alluvial deposits, causing great variety in the types and tastes of these French wines. The climate is extremely hot in summer and mild in winter but rain does not fall evenly throughout the year. An entire vineyard can be destroyed by a cloudburst. Winemaking in Roussillon in the past decades has changed greatly with significant improvement of the regulation of temperature before and during fermentation. The white French wine is light, fresh, and fruity: drink it at 10- 12°C (50-53.6°F) .

    The rose is produced by the saignee methode, meaning that the red French wine is drawn off early and then vinified as white wine. Because the wine is drawn off so quickly, the grape skins have had just enough time to impart their wonderful red colour without adding tannin to the wine. This rose is very fruity. Drink this taste French wine at 12°C (53.6°F) .

    There are two different types of red wine. A light wine is often produced by steeping in carbonic acid gas maceration carbonique), which is fruity, slightly spicy, and particularly pleasing. For a good taste drink this French wine at 12- 14°C(53 .6-57.2°F) .

    The traditionally made red French wine is stronger and more rounded. The bouquet tends towards red cherry, plums, preserved fruit, and spices. This French wine can be kept for some time because it is aged in wood. Drink this French wine at 14- 16°C (57 .2- 60.8°F) .

     

    Cotes du Roussillon Villages

    The difference of this red French wine from the other Cotes du Roussillon wines is its specific terroirs, which mainly consist of the sides of hills or terraces of shale, chalk, and granite. The grapes used are the same as ordinary Cotes du Roussillon but the output per hectare is much lower. The appellation Cotes du Roussillon Villages may be used by 32 communes in the north of the department on vineyards extending to 2,000 hectares. These French wines are stronger, more powerful, and more complex than Cotes du Roussillon, and can be kept longer. For a good taste serve this French wine at 16°C (60.8°F) .

    Among the 32 communes of Cotes du Roussillon Villages, there are four which are permitted to bear their name on the label, in recognition of their higher quality.

    Hierro Spain WineThis Canarian DO is in the hands of just one cooperative bodega which has certainly finished with the less glorious past history of wine-making on the island. Through the modernisation and replacement of their wine-making equipment and improved methods of vinification an end has been brought here to dirty, non-sterile, and heavily oxidised wine.

    Now they make fine white, rosé and red Spanish wines for local consumption. Traditional wine is still blended from a variety of grapes (white: Listán Blanco (Palomino), Vermejuela, or Bermejuela and Vijariego; rosé and red: Listán Negro or Negramoll. The more modem Spanish wines though are made from a single variety or at most from two. The choice is from the varieties listed above but also includes Pedro Ximénez, Verdello, Breval, Diego, Gual, Malvasia, and Moscatel. Many of the grape varieties used have long since disappeared from the Spanish mainland but they thrive on the volcanic soil.

    Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru Cote de NuitsThe aromas of Griotte-Chambertin are complex and unusually subtle for a good French Wine. Hints of cherry brandy and preserved cherry have been discerned, with suggestions of leather and a pinch of nutmeg. When more mature there are also the aromas of truffle and animal scents. 

    The French describe this smell as 'gamey' because it is reminiscent of well-hung game. Tannin is clearly apparent yet muted, which combined with a high level of alcohol by volume, ensure a velvet soft, al most caressing wine. The sensations of the nose are echoed in the taste although Jess pronounced and accompanied by the elegant hint of wood. A good Griotte-Chambertin has remarkable style, richness, and complexity.

     

    MAZIS-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU

    This rare French wine from Chambertin is both powerful and supple, well structured, complex, yet elegant and subtle.

     

    MAZOYÉRES-CHAMBERTIN FRENCH WINE

    This is an elegant and charming red French wine with average structure, not especially complex or powerful but certainly very fruity. It should not be kept too long.

     

    MOREY-ST-DENIS FRENCH WINE

    Although somewhat overlooked among the great character wines of Chambertin and the delicate sed ucers of Chambolle-Musigny, the wine of Morey­ St-Denis is worthy of greater recognition. It possesses a very clear red colouring, fruity nose (morello cherry) with hints of-wood, herbs, spices, fungus, and leather, and has a fulsome, soft as velvet, and very balanced taste. Furthermore this French wine is suitable for keeping for a long time. Specially recommended: the Premier.Cru 'Les Ruchots'.

     

    CLOS DE LA ROCHE GRAND CRU

    Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru Cote de NuitsThe French wine is a very dark ruby colour. The aroma recalls black cherry and sometimes a hint of animal scents such as musk. The suggestion of cedarwood cigar box is almost always present. It is a big but harmonious wine with plenty of tannin yet retains a velvety-soft texture. The French wine continues to 'breathe' in the mouth for some time.

     

    CLOS ST-DENIS GRAND CRU

    This French wine is a fine ruby colow• with the suggestion of a tinge of granite. It has a surprising and complex nose in which blackcurrant, blackberry, prune, occasionally musk, herbs, spices, coffee, but also sometimes violets or other flowers can be discerned.

     

    CLOS DES LAMBAYS GRAND CRU

    This French wine is somewhat modest and overlooked. It is a classic fruity Burgundy with suggestions of black cherry and hints of floral and animal aromas such as leather and musk. This is a full-bodied, rounded wine of some style.

    Cheverny Blanc Loire FranceThe Loire is France’s longest river, flowing almost 650 miles from the foothills of the Massif Central in the Ardéche to the Atlantic Ocean west of Nantes. Fairy tale castles overlook the vineyards that flank most of the river and its tributaries. Near its source are the vineyards of Sancerre, Pouilly and the Coteaux du Giennois. Reuilly and Quincy mingle among the southern tributaries. To the east of Tours is Vouvray, and then Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur, Muscadet and a scattering of smaller appellations as you near the sea.

  • Yecla Spanish Wine

    Yecla region mapYecla is a relatively small DO surrounding the town of the same name but it is actually an enclave in the much larger area of Jumilla. The smaller bodegas have been busy now for several decades with a policy of change and radical renewal.

    The lack of success is not due to either the soil or the climate for these are comparable with neigh-bouring Valdepeñas: chalk with underlying clay and thick surface layer plus the same continental climate with hot summers and cold winters with large temperature range between night and day. The blue grapes used are Monastrell (80%) and Garnacha. Trials are also being carried out with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
