Luxembourg’s vineyards are all situated on the west bank of the Moselle. The wine area starts at Schenen on the French border and finishes at Wasserbillig on the German border. The Moselle valley is between 300 and 400 metres (984 and 1,312 feet) wide and is flanked by softly undulating hills. The vineyards lie at heights of 150-250 metres (492-820 feet) above sea level.
The soil varies from marl in the southern canton of Reumich to chalk rock in the Grevenmacher canton in the north.
The landscape also varies from soft featured and gently undulating at Reumich (known for its mellow and almost caressing wines) to hard and rugged at Grevenmacher (known for its elegant but pithy wines with clear indication of terroir). The grapes can be happily left to grow and ripen here because it is never either too hot or too cold because the river moderates extremes of temperature.
One remark before we start: many find Luxembourg wines delicious, light, and amenable thirst quenchers for drinking young. The best Luxembourg wines though really need to be laid down for a time before they are drunk. These wines are quite markedly acidic because of the northern position of the vineyards.
A period of rest makes them more tasty and balanced. This is certainly true of the best of the Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.
