    This other member of the Montrachet family needs to be laid down for some years before it can be fully enjoyed.

     Then the colour is clear, pure golden yellow and the heady bouquet is readily released from the glass. It has a nose of exotic fruit, croissants with butter, exotic wood, almond, and honey. The taste is fresh and silken with a hint of tannin and a prolonged aftertaste. Drink this French wine at about 55.4°F/13°C.

    BIENVENUES-BTARD-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU

    The French wine is golden yellow with a green tinge. It has a very fruity bouquet together with hints of toast, butter, citrus fruit, and sometimes a characteristic t1inty undertone.

    CRIOTS-BTARD-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU

    This is a very rare white wine that in many respects resembles   the   Bienvenues-Biitard-Montrachet, certainly sharing its flinty smell and taste.

    CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET

    Once only red French wines were made here, today the reds and   whites   are   of equal   importance.   White Chassagne-Montrachet is a pale golden colour and it possesses a very intense nose in which buttered croissants, flowers, lemons, and later roasted almond and herbs can be recognised. Some wine also has a noticeable mineral scent and taste. The white Chassagne-Montrachet is generally a fresh, juicy, and very refined wine of great character.

    Red Chassagne-Montrachet is dark red and has a bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and other woodland fruit, with a hint of liquorice. Most it is well structured, full , and fatty.

    BURGUNDY WINE *** FRENCH WINE

    ST-AUBIN

    Red French wine is also made here but the reputation is mainly due to the white wines. The colour is pale golden yellow and the nose     recalls  acacia blossom,   yellow plum, and almond. This later develops into dried fruit and honey. This is a fine, fresh, and generous wine, with sometimes a tendency to plumpness and mineral undertones. The taste and aftertaste are very aromatic.

    SANTENAY

    This is a ruby red wine with aromas of red fruit and fruits of the forest such as blackberry and bilberry. The French wine can be somewhat harsh in tanin when young but this changes after several years ageing i.n the bottle. Once fully mature a good Santenay develops a very exciting bouquet incorporating wild fungi including truffie.

    The white French wine is generally not among the best whites but choose one from a Premier Cru vineyard for these are well worth drinking. llis a fulsome and fruity wine with clearly recognisable Chardonnay characteristics: butter, croissants, toast, hazelnuts. citrus fruit, and white flowers.

    Bordeaux Wine BottlesThe Gironde, in south west France, is the country’s largest Departement, and the home of Bordeaux wines, including claret, Britain’s favorite French wine for centuries. But while all claret is Bordeaux, not all Bordeaux is claret.

    Bordeaux is the largest region of fine wine production – red, white and dessert – in the world. The vines cover more than 500 square miles, split almost evenly between red and white grapes, and most of the wines have AC status. The vineyards run from the west bank of the Gironde estuary southwards to below the river Garonne.

The region is home to many of the world’s finest wines, both red and white – and many of the most expensive. Prices of the best wines have rocketed in the last few years, but there are still many bargains to be had.

  • CORTON GRAND CRU

    This is an exceptionally   well-known  French wine, not because it is better than other Burgundies, but because the wine travels well without the quality suffering. The colour is an intense red and there are powerful aromas of preserved fruit, plum, musk, and humus as the wine matures, with a hint of pepper and herbs.

    This full, strong, fatty wine that is high in tannin needs to mature for some years in the bottle. The taste improves considerably with maturity. The aftertaste is full and very prolonged. This is a wine for winter drinking.

    CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU

    The vineyards of this magnificent white French wine are reputed to have been established under instructions from Charlemagne. He was renowned for both sloth and a love of red wine. He spilt so much wine on his fine white beard though that he was forced, reluctantly, to switch to white wine which had to be a good one and hence his orders. This is a very pure, clear white wine with the characteristic nose of a Chardonnay in which hot butter, toast, roasted almond, hazelnut with occasional suggestion of honey and minerals are discerned. This is a very full, almost plump wine that is a perfect ambassador for the good Burgundian life. Do not drink this wine too cold (53.6-57.2°F/12-14°C).

    SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE

    This is a fine white French wine with a wide assortment of fruity, floral, and even mineral aromas. The wine is full and elegant and sometimes has a generous undertone. It is exceptionally full in taste with hints of white fruit such as apple, pear, or peach, and suggestions of freshly-toasted bread with melted butter.

    Perhaps the red Savigny wine is better known. It is an attractive ruby colour and has a nose suggesting wild fruit and a touch of pepper that are charac­ teristic of this area. It is a delightful, delicate, and supple wine.

    CHOREY-LES-BEAUNE

    This is an wonderful wine to look at with its pure, clear,and attractive cherry red colour. It has an intense bouquet predominated by fruit (raspberry, pomegranate, blackberry, and cherry) which later change to the classic nose of preserved fruit, humus, and game. This is not a truly complex wine but the texture is good and the taste is f ull, supple, and above all velvet smooth.

    BEAUNE

    The very ancientvineyards aro und Beaune produce co untless fine red French wines. The strength ofth is district is to be found in the Premier Cru parcels of land of which Les Gravieres is the best known. The wine is richly   coloured, dark , and   clear. The youthful aromas of red fruit and herbs with occasional undertones of blackcurrant quickly gives way to stronger scents   which   are often reminiscent of smoke and tobacco. This is a very concentrated wine, strong and complex, that mellows after several years ageing in the bottle.

    The white French wines are pale golden in colour and very clear. The bouquet is reminiscent of butter, honey, almond, lemon balm, and later of hazelnut and roasted dried fruit. Do not serve this wine too chilled (55.4-57.2°F/13-14°C) .

    The red Clos des Mouches is a pale ruby red with a nose of ripe cherry,   herbs, and a suggestion of smoke. It is a full, elegant but powerful wine. Do not serve too warm (60.8-64.4°F/16-18°C).

    This is a fairly rare red wine that is generally high in tannin.

     

    CÔTES DE BEAUNE VILLAGES

    Originates from vineyards in approximately sixteen communes. It is an excellent red wine that the locals prefer to drink when young - within three to five years of the harvest. Drink this wine at about 62.6°F (17°C).{jcomments on}

  •   The Côtes Châlonnaise between Chagny, Montagny and Couches will probably surprise many a visitor.

    BOURGOGNE CÔTE CHALONNAISE

    This is a fairly recent appellation (1990) for white but especially red wines, spread through 44 communes.

    The white French wine is a light, floral and fruity Chardonnay (citrus and exotic fruit) with a lithe, fatty, and balanced taste. The very fruity cherry red wine is light, friendly, warm, and generous.

    RULLY

    These French white and red wines acquire an aromatic finesse through their chalk soils. The white Rully is a very pure and clear golden white with very seductive bouquet containing broom, almond, and citrus fruit with a fresh and elegant taste that has undertones of fruit and flowers.

    The ruby red Rully has a nose when young of red fruit such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and red- currant. Late this evolves into a riper fruit bouquet with suggestions of tobacco and moist autumn soil. The taste is typical of a Burgundy, fat and fresh, with elegant tannin and much fruitiness, especially in the aftertaste.

    MERCUREY

    Most white Mercurey wines are a light, friendly, and above all uncomplicated aperitif French wine. The red Mercurey is an attractive ruby red colour and fruity aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant, and cherry, often with a pinch of herbs.

     

    GIVRY

    Like its neighbours from Montagny, wine from Givry is an entirely under regarded Chardonnay white. Consequently it is modestly priced for the quality offered.

    There are a couple of whites from Givry that have gorgeous bouquets of acacia and may blossom, apple, almond, and sometimes also lime blossom and lilac. These full, fatty whites can be found in the totally reliable Guide Hachette. Drink this French wine with freshwater fish.

    Red Givry is very colourful with   an   intensely aromatic nose   of redcurrant and   blackcurrant. When older there are herbal undertones. This is a fleshy wine with considerable finesse and a pleasant fruity taste.

    MONTAGNY

    The best Montagny wine has a pale and unimposing colour but with an exceptional array of scents: apple, citrus fruit, fresh almonds, fern, hazelnut, and butter.

    The taste is lithe, elegant, fresh, and rounded.

     

    BOURGOGNE ALIGOTIDE BOUZERON

    This French wine is better than the general Aligote AC. It is an exceptionally pleasing fresh wine with a seductive nose of roses, peony, and white fruit, sometimes accompanied by cinnamon.{jcomments on}

  •  Côtes de Beaune FRENCH WINE

    Côtes de Beaune French wineThe Côtes de Beaune, between Lad oix-Serrigny and Maranges is mainly known for white French wines.

    This is yet another example of a little known French wine and yet we are in close proxinlity to the world­ famous vineyards of Corton. The wine is ruby red in colour with a hint of amber. The bouquet is seductive, containing herbs, leather and humus in the upper notes. The taste is fruity with a lingering aftertaste. Drink this Ladoix French wine at about 60.8°F(16°C).

    Uncork the wine some time before drinking to allow it to breathe. Some white Ladoix is also made which is dry with a light vegetal nose with hints of hazelnut and other dried fruit. It is a charming and concentrated French wine.

     

    ALOXE-CORTON FRENCH WINE

    This is a firm, concentrated French wine that travels well. The colour, though strong and deep, is slightly unusual-somewhere between ochre and rust. This results from the strong presence of iron in the soil. All manner of fruit is present in the nose: cherry, plum, raspberry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. This is a superb French wine, full and powerful, with suggestions of herbs and wood in the lingering aftertaste.

     

    PERNAND-VERGELESSES FRENCH WINE

    PERNAND-VERGELESSESThere are both white and red French wines from here. The white wines are rarer and less well-known. They are a wonderful golden colour, characteristic of Chardonnay, with a pale tinge of green. The nose is reminiscent of honey, honeysuckle, citrus fruit, and an explosion of tropical fruit in the better years. Early on the wood perhaps dominates too much but this changes after a year's ageing in the bottle. The taste is rich and full, with great tenderness and charm.  

    The red French wine is ruby red and has a remarkable nose evoking sloes, Russian fur, hazelnut, blackcurrant, herbs, and chocolate. The wine has a fabulous taste that is full and fatty, velvet soft and powerful simultaneously, with a very prolonged aftertaste.

  • Côtes de Nuits

    Cotes de NuitsThe Côtes de Nuits is world-famous for its red French wines and home to a great assortment ofterroirs and styles. The area starts in Marsannay and ends at Corgoloin. The soil is chalky with a lower layer of marl.

    The French red wine is somewhat heavy and rough when young but after several years ageing it becomes gentler, more rounded, and plump, with the aroma of red fruit, in particular cherry, blackcurrant, and redcurrant, with the occasional hint of prune, liquorice, cocoa, or coffee.

    The best known wine is the Rosé de Marsannay. This French wine is pale pink with some orange. The smell is fresh and pleasant while the taste is reminiscent of red fruit. The white French wine is very fresh, full-bodied, and impetuous but more supple and rounded when mature. The wine is intensely coloured, has a characteristic Chardonnay scent with exotic fruit, such as pineapple and grapefruit, and a big taste.

     

    FIXIN FRENCH WINE

    Fixin is best known for its red French wines. This is usually a fleshy, powerful wine with quite a lot of tannin when young which enables it to be kept. When young the wine is ruby red and has the nose of cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. When mature the scent is of plum or even leather.

     

    GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN FRENCH WINE

    Cotes de Nuits Wine LabelThis French wine is an attractive ruby red that is pure and clear. The characteristlc aromas are of black cherry, blackberry, and other small fruit, with an occasional hint of liquorice.

    It acquires a bouquet of spices, including nutmeg, and leather through maturing in oak which takes on earthy tones, bushes, wet leaves, and toadstools when it has reached a respectable age.

    This French wine is high in tannin but not so that it disturbs the taste, in part because of the fullness of the French wine. The taste is very full and fruity. The wine can be kept for 10-20 years after its harvest. The Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers is highly recommended.

  • ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU FRENCH WINE

    Echezeaux Grand Cru French wineThis French wine is an intense bright red with nose of fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, and raspberry, together with fruit stones, cocoa, and cedarwood of cigar boxes. It is an extremely juicy wine that is f resh and well-structured, velvet­ smooth, with a finish of bitter chocolate. The wine continues to breath for some time.

    This French wine is a very dark but particularly bright and pure granite red. The fruity nose dominates the young wine with hint of burnt cocoa or bitter chocolate. After maturing in the bottle the bouquet takes on the smell of fungus, truffle, and leather, with a hint of cedarwood and tobacco. This is a very elegant, classic Burgundy with refined tannin and velvet soft texture, that is fresh and exceptionally harmonious. The afte rtaste lingers very long.

     

    VOSNE-ROMANEE FRENCH WINE

    This French wineis an attractive clear colour with fascinating reflections. There is an intriguing scent of wild cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, cocoa, nutmeg, leather, and various vegetal undertones. When older the wine often develops the distinctive nose of black truffle. It is a very rich, refined, and complex wine with velvety texture and prolonged aftertaste. Do not drink a Vosne-Romanee before it is 7-8 years old.

     

    RICHEBOURG GRAND CRU FRENCH WINE

    This French wine is an exciting dark  ruby   red colour, with strong nose of plum or prune, black cherry, red fruit such as redcurrant, and hints of cocoa, burnt vanilla, herbs, and animal scents. The taste is powerful too, tremendously concen­ trated, with great potential for laying down for a long time. Truly a wine to keep.

     

    LAROMAN EGRAND CRU FRENCH WINE

    This French wine is one of the smallest vineyards of France but one of the best. The wine possesses an intense ruby colouring with fiery reflections. The nose is reminiscent of red fruit, cherry brandy, and preserved fruit. Th is is an extremely intense wine that is velvety smooth and generous.

     

    LA ROMANÉE-CONTI GRAND CRU FRENCH WINE

    Romanee Conti Grand CruThe same applies to this French wine as La Romanée, albeit that tllis wine is perhaps somewhat finer and more elegant with a distinctive expression of its chmat. This is a .sublime wine for the happy few and one of the most impressive experiences a wine drinker can undergo.

     

    ROMANÉE-ST­ VIVANT GRAND CRU FRENCH WINE

    This French wine is an intense, dark   ruby   colour   in common with the other Romanee   wines.   The youthful nose is of black­berry, raspberry,   black, cherry, preserved fruit, and fruit liqueurs but this makes way later for a more vegetal bouquet with hints of moss, humus, truffle, and game.

    The texture for this French wine is full and firm, the taste is fresh, elegant, and juicy. Ripe fruit and a touch of exotic spices can be discerned in the aftertaste. Allow this wine to rest for at least 10-15 years.

  • HERMITAGE

    Red Hermitage(French Wine) is somewhat harsh when young and requires some years rest; depending on the quality, this can be 5, 10, or even 20 years.

    Those with sufficient patience are rewarded with a very great wine with a sensual bouquet in which leather, red and white fruit, and wild flowers are present in the upper notes. The taste is largely of preserved fruit.

    Serve at 60.8-64.4°F (16-18°C). These white French wine is ready for drinking much earlier than the red but can also be kept for some time. Its smell is reminiscent of a sea of flowers with suggestions of vanilla and roasted almonds. It is a powerful, rounded wine with considerable aromatic potential. Drink at approx. 53.6°F (12°C) .

    CORNAS

    This red French wine is dark coloured and has an exciting bouquet in which red fruit, freshly-ground pepper, sweetwood, preserved fruit, and even truffles are present. The undertones are almost animalistic.

    ST-PERAY

    This is the only appellation which also makes sparkling wine. It is more of an amusing wine than an exciting one that is best drunk when young.

    GIGONDAS

    Gigondas is made from Grenache, supplemented with mainly Syrah and Mourvedre. The red wine is a wonderful colour and has a bouquet filled with fresh red fruit through to animal undertones and when older some fungal notes. It is a full, powerful, and well-balanced wine that is a little harsh when young. The wine needs keeping for a few years.

    The roses are fresh, cheerful wines with a great deal of extract. Drink these when young.

    VACQUEYRAS

    The whites and roses are drunk when young for any occasion. These red French wine with its characteristic scent of ripe red fruit such as cherry, and hint of sweetwood, has more power. Drink it at approx. 62.6°F (17°C).

    CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

    Although 13 different varieties of grape are permitted, the red wine is generally made from Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Syrah, Muscardin and Counoise, while the whites use Clairette and Bourboulenc.

    These red French wine has a very complex bouquet containing red fruit, leather, anise, sweetwood, and herbs, and equally complex taste that is rounded, unctuous, with a prolonged aftertaste. Wait for five years after harvest before drinking the red but consume the white wine while still young.

    The white wine is very aromatic and rounded with a nose that has floral undertones such as camphor oil and narcissus. True estate bottled Chiiteauneuf-du-Pape bears the arms of Avignon on the bottles: the papal crown and cross-keys of St Peter.

    LlRAC

    Lirac is growing in popularity. These are good French wines at a relatively low price.

     

    TAVEL

    Tavel is one of the finest roses of France. The pink colour tends towards terracotta tiles or even orange. Hints of apricot, peach, and roasted almond can be detected in the bouquet. Drink this wine at approx. 55.4°F (13°C) .

  • ST-ROMAIN

    Although a very acceptable red is also made, it is the white wine from here that is of greatest interest. It is a very typical Chardonnay, pale golden, sometimes tinged with green, that has refined aromas

    of white flowers and white fruit such as pear, mirabelle plum, and peach. The nose and taste often contain strong notes of butter, hazelnut, almond, and occasionally of baked dried fruit. It is a rich and complex French wine.

    MEURSAULT

    Wine from Meursault is celebrated throughout the world for its wonderful golden colour, intense bouquet   of butter,   honey, hazelnut, and lime blossom in which surprising suggestions can be detected of may blossom and spiced bread. It is a silken soft, full, and generous with an aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Enjoy a young Meursault as an aperitif or with a light starter. Do not drink any cooler than 53.6°F(12°C).

    There is also a red Meursault, which is fruity and pleasant but never truly convincing.

    BURGUNDY WINE *** FRENCH WINE

    PULIGNY -MONTRACHET

    The 'ordinary' Puligny-Montrachat is a perfect example of refinement and complexity. It is a pale golden colour with nose of white flowers and fruit, sometimes combined with honey, roasted dried fruit, almond, and quince. In the better years the bouquet develops hints of tropical fruit. It is a really fine French wine, fresh and silken, with a tremendous assortment of flowers and fruit in the taste and a prolonged aftertaste. The Premier Cru (e.g. Folatieres, Clos de Ia Garenne) has a more complex bouquet. The nose is reminiscent of new-mown hay, honey, fresh almond, dried fruit, and herbs. This French wine needs to be kept for at least five years in order to fully enjoy its quality. Do not chill too much (approx55.4°F/. 13°C).

    BURGUNDY WINE *** FRENCH WINE

    MONTRACHET GRAND CRU

    This French wine is one of the pillars on which the reputation of Burgundy is built both within France and abroad. It is a fabulous pale golden colour. It takes a number of years for scents captured in the wine to develop themselves fully. Those who drink this wine too young will be disappointed because the bouquel fails to open out. Remain patient for after five years it develops an unimaginable bouquet in which young exotic fruit are combined with the nose of exotic wood, citrus fruit, herbs, lily-of-the­ valley, peach, and almond. Wines from certain climals also possess a light mineral undertone.

    BURGUNDY WINE *** FRENCH WINE

    The French wine is simultaneously fresh and rounded, full and elegant, refined and seductive, and the aftertaste lingers almost for ever. Drink this rare and expensive wine at 57.2-59°F/14-15°C.

    CHEVALIER-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU

    Has a golden colour and very seductive bouquet containing butter, Loast, and vegetal undertones with occasional hint of mineral. It is a full, warm, genetous, and juicy wine with a very aromatic taste.

  • Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Wines

    The Vic-Bilh wine-growing area is the same one that produces Madiran. This area produces the red Madiran wine and dry, medium sweet, and sweet French white wines as Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. Pacherenc is derived from the Basque or Gascon word for little berry or grape. The ideal soil for this white French wine is a mixture of clay and sandstone. The grapes used are the native Arrufiac, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, and Courbu, with a little Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon being used for the modern type of French wine.

    Pacherenc du Vic-BilhDry Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh is very aromatic with floral notes and hints of citrus fruit combined with a full taste of ripe and preserved fruits. Drinking temperature for this French wine: 10- 12°C (50- 53.6°F). The medium-sweet or sweet Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh shares the aromatic properties ofthe dry wine (citrus fruit, preserved fruit, dried fruit, and flowers) with the addition of a little honey, toast, and exotic fruit. The texture and taste are fuller, fatter, more fleshy, and juicy. Drinking temperature for French wine: 8-10°C ( 46.4-50° F).

    Your attention is drawn to the excellent quality of the local vins de pays des Cotes de Gascogne and the   many vins de cepages. The vins de pays des Cotes de Gascogne of Colombard, Gros Manseng, and Sauvignon (white French wines) and reds of Egiodola, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, together with those from Jurançon are worth a separate mention.

     

    Jurançon Wines

    Juracon Label WineThis wine-growing area, south of Pau and close to the French Pyrenees, is slightly less ancient than its predecessors. The first signs of wine-growing date back only to the tenth century. Jurançon was one of the first AC status French wines in 1936 and Jurançon Sec acquired its own recognition in 1975.

     

    The wine-growing

    The area is barely larger than 600 hectares with the vineyards being dispersed throughout the district. They can be found strung out along a 40 km (25 miles) stretch like small islands amidst the other greenery. The better French wines are produced on hills of about 300 metres (984 feet) high with soil of clay, sandstone, and boulders.

    The climate is a mixture of high and regular rainfall from the Atlantic combined with the harsh winters of the Pyrenees. The area does though appear always to be blessed with warm autumns and dry southerly winds that make it possible for the grapes to be left to overripen in order to make a great sweet French wine. The grapes used for Jurançon are the native Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Courbu, Camaralet, and Lauzet. Jurançon Sec is truly dry with fresh acidity, with floral notes (broom and acacia) and fruity aromas (passion fruit, white peach, and citrus fruit) . As the French wine matures it develops a more complex bouquet with almond and other nuts, dried fruit, and sometimes a marked suggestion of truffle. Drinking temperature for this French wine: 8- 10°C (46.4-50°F) .

    Either Jurançon Doux or Moelleux are little gems. The colour drifts between gold and amber, the bouquet is fine and complex, varying from honey, vanilla, toast and preserved fruit to the subtlest hints of white flowers, lime blossom, camomile, pineapple, and citrus fruit.     Bearn-Bellocq

    Beam is fairly hilly, lying at the foot of the Pyrenees where it enjoys an ideal microclimate that combines Atlantic moisture with a harsher mountain climate. Bearn white French wine is quite rare and is produced in the vicinity of Bellocq. This white French wine made with Raffiat and Manseng grapes is fresh and fruity with an undertone of floral notes (broom, acacia) .     The more widely available Rose de Beam owes its charm to the combination of Tannat with Cabernet
