Smarje- Viistanj Slovenian Wine
This is another area where a great deal of white Slovenian wine is made such as excellent Laski Riesling (Welsch Riesling), Beli Pinot, Chardonnay, Sivi Pinot, Renski Riesling (Rhine Riesling), Zeleni Silvaniec, Traminer, Ranina, Rizvanec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zlahtnina. The red Slovenian wines here are fairly light, fresh and fruity and chiefly made from Frankinja, Modri Pinot, Portugalka, Sentlovrenka, Kraljevina, Gamay, Zweigelt, and Zametovka.
Bizeljsko-Sremic Slovenian Wine
This is a first class white Slovenian wine area using Sipon, Beli Pinot, Laski Riesling (Welsch Riesling), Zeleni Silvanec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. There are reasonable to good red wines from Modri Pinot and Modra Frankinja, and full-bodied, warm and strong Pozne Trgatve (Spatlese), Suhi Jagodni Izbori (Trockenbeerenauslese), and Ledeno Vino (Eiswein). The last of these is an elegant sparkling Slovenian wine made by the traditional method. There is also a rare and amusing port-type Slovenian wine.
Dolensjka Slovenian Wine
Well-known Cvicek comes from Dolensjka. This is a light Slovenian wine with relatively low alcohol that is elegant and fresh with subtle body and a dry but certainly not hard taste. This surprising rosé is made from blue grapes, including Frankinja, Zametovka, Kraljevina, and Sentlovrenka together with white grapes such as Laski Riesling, Zeleni Silvanec, Rumeni Plavec. This Slovenian wine is widely served at local festivities because of its tremendous freshness coupled with low alcohol. Slovenians believe that Cvicek is beneficial for the digestion (acidity versus fat) and with its low sugar and alcohol it is suitable for diabetics.
Other good Slovenian wines from this area are whites such as Laski Riesling (Welsch Riesling), Zeleni Silvanec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, and the red Modra Frankrinja.
Bela Krajina Slovenian Wine
This southern most wine area of Slovenia produces excellent red wines from varieties such as Modra Frankinja, Zametovka, Portugalka, Sentlovrenka, Gamay, and Modri Pinot.
One of the best red wines from Slovenia is probably the locally made Metliska Crnina. They have also been making white wines from Laski Riesling (Welsch Riesling), Belin Pinot, Renski Riesling (Rhine Riesling), Zeleni Silvanec, Sivin Pinot, Rumeni Muskat, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc since the 1980s. These Slovenian wines tend more towards full-bodied, heavy, and ponderous than elegance and balance. By contrast the Pozne Trgatve, Jagodni Izbori, and Ledeno Vino wines of Bela Krajina are excellent.
